FSCD ALBERTA
What Your FSCD Caseworker Wishes You Knew Before Your First Meeting.
The questions most families don’t know to ask, and the ones that unlock the most support

Before I ever understood FSCD, I entered meetings thinking I just had to explain my child and the system would see it clearly. Yaaaa...I learned quickly that it does not work that way.

You are not just sharing a diagnosis. You are translating daily life into a system that only funds what it can clearly understand, document and has a check box beside it.

I have left some of those meetings thinking, “I should have said more,” or “I should have explained that differently.” I have definitely learned that the families who get support are not the ones with the loudest stories. They are the ones who can clearly show what daily life actually looks like.

The things listed here are to help you walk in already knowing what matters, what gets missed, and what questions open doors instead of closing them.

FSCD is not automatic. It is needs-based.
Your first meeting sets the tone for everything that follows.

What matters most:

  • Be clear about your child’s daily needs. Not just diagnosis.

  • Focus on function. What your child cannot do independently.

  • Show impact on your family. Safety. Supervision. Burnout.

  • Be specific. General statements do not lead to support.

  • Bring documents. Reports. Assessments. Notes.

What caseworkers are looking for:

  • Level of care required each day

  • Safety risks

  • Parent capacity and limits

  • Consistency of needs across environments

Common mistakes:

  • Downplaying challenges

  • Focusing only on strengths

  • Assuming diagnosis equals funding

  • Not asking what is possible

Questions most families don’t ask (but should):

  • What supports are available that I am not currently accessing?

  • What would qualify us for increased respite?

  • How is need assessed and documented?

  • What does a successful request look like on your end?

  • When can we request a review?

Questions that unlock support:

  • What specific documentation would support this request?

  • How can I clearly show the level of supervision required?

  • What gaps do you see in our current file?

  • What options exist if current supports are not enough?

Leave the meeting with:

  • Clear next steps

  • Timelines

  • What to submit

  • When follow-up will happen
